Michelangelo, an Italian sculptor, inspired my latest photo series when it comes to his process of thought when sculpting his master pieces. Even though my medium of choice isn’t sculpture, I can still relate to many quotes from Michelangelo. He said that “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it”. In this same way I brought this forward in my work. Think of it like this, the photo is my creation and it needs to be ‘discovered’ to be molded into a masterpiece. Later he said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free”, which brought out one of his most popular works, commissioned by the Medici family; David!
What’s great about being a photographer is, that I get to see the art, the muse, the process of it all through my lens. I can see what others cannot see. When it came to the concept for this photo series, I wanted to be creative and take the idea of sculpting and have a different approach to it in order to convey my creation and bring it to life as I photographed the models. I used milk to represent the marble which got sculpted by the movements the models made; creating the sculpture.
Lastly, I wanted this series to be something special. Therefore, I selected three models, which I felt represented the key concept for this series, which was to convey sculpture into photography and create a masterpiece.Michelangelo, an Italian sculptor, inspired my latest photo series when it comes to his process of thought when sculpting his master pieces.
